For the love of...

the ocean...
the salt water that makes ringlets in her hair...

the thrill of the chase...

sand covered chubby little legs.

This day....

I love this time of day....
the cat has just come in from roaming the night and is hunkered down for a good days sleep.

Today we will collect goodies for a "pool party, I am almost 8 years old" bash tomorrow.

We will be out of our pajamas by....nineish????

We will eat enough fresh cucumbers from our garden to make one wonder....is that healthy?

I will look my "to do" list squarely in the eye...and then laugh heartily when it sticks it's tongue out at me.

I will finish the entire pot of coffee.

I will think about the kind of mother I was yesterday...and practice being the kind of mother I just read about being this morning.

I will kiss my husband in front of my children.  No doubt one of the most important things that will happen in this house today.

I will make food miraculously appear on the table three...whole...times.

I will be nice to myself today...because if I don't, then why should anybody else?

A well lived house...

Pretty fantastic...right?

This is my friends house.
It sits in the middle of what is the sweet spot of our little town...

Whenever I come over my friend fumbles around with words like, "oh don't look at that mess" or "oh I've really got to get to that"...

But I'm so distracted by the knock your socks off hydrangeas in the front yard I just don't have time to check on her mumblings...

The deal is this....

it doesn't take much to have a house...

a couple pieces of furniture, a number over the door and a place to collect the mail and your done.

But a home...

well that is all together different.
That requires someone's shoes left by the front door.
A well worn couch from hours of a family snuggling.
A floor so well trod that dust bunnies only dare to gather in the corners.
Treasures.  Lots and lots of treasures.
A kitchen with traces still lingering from the most recent meal.
Love notes on the frige.

A well lived house is something you can call h-o-m-e.

To market....

This summer has been for growing....
everywhere you look...
things are not just sprouting up but in FULL bloom...
my kids are taller, the pumpkins are rounder, the tomato plants are taller than me.

This weekend the Walla Walla Farmers Market had ample proof that this has been a spectacular summer.

It's my special day...

It's my special day today...
my day of birth...
our day went a little something as pictured above...
it was a lot like yesterday, and the day before that, and the day before that.

I was thinking today about my 25 year old self...
and what I would have done if someone had told me what my life would be like in ten years...

-You will have three daughters= I would have peed my pants

-You will have two under grad degrees and a masters= I would have laughed out loud

-You will be healthier, more fit and several pounds lighter= I would have picked my jaw up off the ground

-You will grow zucchini and mini eggplants= I would have been very confused

-Your husband will be balding and people will start calling him "sir"= I would have run my fingers through his hair more often

-You will live in one of your favorite places on earth= I would have cried happy tears

-You will meet more kindred spirits= I would have smiled

-You will lose more than one beloved soul= I would have cried sad tears

The past ten years have been a wild ride...not at all what I could have ever sketched out for myself....

I think I'll take ten more please...

and just like this day if you don't mind.

As simple as that...

Last summer all I could grow in the cucumber department was bitter, terrible tasting things...
this year....
well....
the garden is making up for last year after some serious soil therapy this spring.

I've been eating this daily since last Sunday....
cucumber
sweet onion
fresh dill
tablespoon of something creamy like greek yogurt, mayo, sour cream
s&p to taste

I have three varieties of cukes growing in the garden this year...
today I am going to have to branch out and try canning some refrigerator pickles....
or maybe just have another bowl of this...
