The girls...

I have a friend.....
her name is Jo.

Jo is the kind of friend that when we see each other, although only twice a year at best, we take a deep breath and just pick up the conversation where we last left off.

She is a friend
an auntie,
a deep soul,
an amazing caramel maker,
a treasure.

Oh.  And kind of an amazing photographer.

She lives in Texas and we got to see her on our visit.
She took the time.
She made the effort.
She also took some of my all time favorite pictures....ever.
Just us girls.
All four of us.

My daughters think she's the coolest thing since sliced bread.
She has captured so many beautiful moments in my life.
She has a gift, a talent and she uses it to bless others.
Now people, if you are put on this earth, there is a reason.
Find it.
Use it.
Do it.

The aftermath....

It's 5:00pm and the washer and dryer have been running all...day...long.
I have one more load to get in tonight, I mean I really have to.
It's the bed sheets.

We just returned from our trip to Texas.

I am tired.

Christmas was sweet, exhausting, fun, draining, joyous, exciting, overwhelming, entertaining, maddening, endearing, holy, and wonderful all at the same time.

I learned I really don't like being away from home on Christmas...just not the same.

I also learned I would rather be with my husband and girls more an anything else...the four and 1/2 of us together makes Christmas happen.

Merry...

Merry Christmas from me to you

Eve of Christmas...

You've waited all year.
You've planned and worked and cooked and wrapped.
Let tomorrow be what it was meant to be.
Celebration.
Love.
A second chance.
Giving.
Receiving.
Holy.

She is....

"I just can't get over how she doesn't look ANYTHING like you!!!" Said to me by a very nice, well meaning woman.

"So...her daddy MUST be blonde."Again...well meaning.

"Does she look like you?" Hummmm, what to reply.

I am not quite sure why in our society it is a compliment to tell someone that their kid looks like them. That some how resemblance is a good thing....a compliment of sorts. At first I thought, no it isn't, that is just someone pointing out an interesting fact. But think about it. When someone says, "your daughter looks just like you" the correct response back is, "ahhhh, thanks!"
THANKS-meaning, that was so nice of you to say.....a COMPLIMENT.
Just so happens I have some strong resembling features of my own mother. I got told that I looked like my mom a lot growing up. Just the other day someone said they figured out who I was in a crowd because I looked like my mom.
I now have two daughters of my own, a third on the way.
When people take the time to point out the OPPOSITE...the fact that your child does not resemble you, what is that?
I have no problem with the fact that they have some strong features of their dad's. I think he's kind of a cutie. I but why does it need to be emphasized how they DO NOT look like their mom.
The above comments are some of the STRONGER opinionated comments that I have gotten.

My point is this:
What is on the outside of my girls is only a fraction of who they are....when I look at my girls I see THEM.

Not my husbands almond shaped eyes that close when he smiles.
Not the bleach blonde hair like the little boy who grew up on the Florida coast.
Not the freckles dusted across her cheeks like her momma.
Not the dark blue circles around their crystal blue eyes like their grandpa's.
Not the flat hands like their great grandma Betty.
Not the heart shaped lips like on my own face....
I see Elliot.
I see Audra.

I see their personalities.
I see THEM.
So my new response is going to be, "your right, she doesn't look anything like me....she looks like Elliot....herself."

Pie....

I just down right love pie.
After this Thanksgiving I am convinced it's the apple's favorite way to be eaten.
Oh love.

Warm hearts, warm hands, warm tummies...

What a lovely way to spend a snowy day...

On a gray day...

1.) I didn't drink my decafe coffee till 9:30 am today (I know, I know...it's only decafe but it still has a mental effect on your day)

2.) I forgot what a waistline looks like on a girl

3.) I think everyone should wear elastic waistband pants

4.)  Three and a half is the coolest age

5.)  If it's past 10:30 am I should be eating...again

6.)  Pumpkins on the dinning room table are shriveling...it's time for them to go

7.)  I broke out the Christmas music

8.)  Gray days aren't bad days....just gray

Four legs...

Today I wish I was this dog....

or this cat....

cause seriously...what a lovely way to spend the afternoon.

The only thing better....

The only thing better than your favorite old shoes....are a new pair of boots.

Am I right... or am I right?

John Fluevog makes the coolest shoes that make the most ordinary person into a rock star.

I would be a perfect example. I like to wear mine to church...that's right...I like to rock on at church. I like making the old lady sitting next to me do a double take.
Through in a pair of fish net stockings and you've got quite a holy experience go'n on!

John doesn't mess around when he makes a pair of shoes....and you PAY for it.
But your feet will thank you. So very, very comfortable. The kind of shoe you can wear while your pregnant...now that is saying something.

I have a couple pair and will own them and wear them for the rest of my life.

Their like children. I tuck them in at night. No, just kidding...kind of.

Go check him out...but remember....your not at Payless Shoes any more.

Knowing....

I know that my baby is going to be okay...
I know that I am going to be okay...
I know that I am already blessed
with girl 1 and girl 2...
I can't believe that God is choosing to bless us
with girl #3

...and she looks great, we saw her this week thanks to some amazing technology...just perfect.

Tastie.....

Fact:
I am a vegetarian
My mom is a vegetarian
My mom's mom was a vegetarian
I grew up in a grocery store that caters to vegetarians

This means I no lika the meat!!
It's a texture thing for me, I've tried it many times and I always feel like you just have to decide to swallow at some point, it never feels like your really done chewing. I don't know, the whole eating dead flesh thing....just can't do it. This also means I don't have a clue how to cook a dead animal either. My husband however does eat meat. This means he has to eat all vegetarian all the time at our house. Before you feel sorry for him let me assure you he has not lost any weight in the last 12 years of marriage. Perhaps gained a pound or two.

So I have for you today a tastie little morsel....
Now that I am feeling better and have started eating regularly again I also am back to updating our family grocery store's blog

Go HERE to find out how these little guys become my most favorite soup....

A moment...

My precious family: mom, dad and brother

You know how you have moments in your life that are seared on your heart or in your mind? Obvious ones like the moment your baby was born, your wedding day, a graduation, or getting "the phone call" late at night.

Then there are moments that don't have any particular good reason for the staying power they posses.

This weekend we had a lovely lunch with my family at my folks house. My brother and his family were there, my mom and dad, my husband and kids and great grandpa.

After we ate everyone was just being...the kids were playing, my mom was cuddling the baby, my husband, brother and sister-in-law lingered at the table while dad and I were on kitchen duty cleaning up after lunch. Great grandpa sat in his wheel chair taking us all in.

As my dad and I moved seamlessly around the kitchen, one loading the dishwasher while the other emptied serving bowls, it hit me.

This feeling that all was right with the world. That it couldn't get any better than this. In the most simple act of family life I felt overwhelmed with wonderful.

It truly surprised me. We have had a million Sabbath lunches together over the years, why on this day, that moment hit me so hard I do not know.

It is now in my treasure chest of memories. For me to take out when ever need be....my moment.

Friday afternoon....

Friday afternoons are spent downtown at ballet class.
One daughter dances, the other daughter waits.
Sometimes we go on an adventure.
This week we found fall.
It was EVERYWHERE.
In all it's glory.
Just lovely.

Juice...

remember those beautiful, jewel like, grapes hanging around my neighbor's yard....
they are now the most tasty juice you have ever wrapped your lips around sitting on my counter.

A little taste of sweet October....say....in February when you can't quite remember what it was like to feel the sun on your face or smell the sweet, sweet smell of mother earth.
What a lovely gift from my neighbor and her diligent garden.

October in the valley....

This little valley just gets sweeter....
it's grape harvesting time right now...
the grapes hang like jewels from the vine...
they've worked hard all summer...
now it's time for them to shine.
